What was I thinking? Hello DockDoggers, Unless you have been asleep or otherwise occupied, you probably have noticed that the website has either been difficult or impossible to reach over the last week or so. Well, we have finally done something permanent about it. Last night, our host moved us over to a new server. Why? Well, one of the sites that we were sharing our old "box" is growing at an exponential rate. Good for them, but they are attracting new eyes by using a technique called "digging" or "slashdotting" (coined from the IT site, slashdot.com, who pioneered this technique), which makes all of their content linked to a topic in their forum using a "teaser". If this wasn't enough, this forum is well known for it's problems with memory leaks. Well...enough of the semi-techy jargon. Baisically it slows down a webserver to a snail's pace. I told our host that we are no longer looking to share a server with a business that holds us at it's mercy with borderline questionable practices. Our host decided that the best solution was to move our site to a new server. This should speed up our site considerably and take care of most of our issues. |

Hello DockDoggers,
Well…I’ve teased you long enough already…
What use is the gallery feature now that the Holiday Photo Contest has come and gone?
Good question…and although the winning pictures are excellent and highly entertaining, you can only look at four pictures for so long.
But, let me digress…after all, this is a blog and that’s what blogs are all about.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be “rolling out” a number of new features here at dockdogs.com. The integrated gallery features are just the first. The planned “roll-out” will feature a number of things that you will enjoy, to enhance you experience here at dockdogs.com. It will culminate in a slightly new look for the site (let’s just call it version 2.01.a). Just so you don’t think I am giving you something for nothing, I’m going to tell you about one of the final fetures that will be integrated…something some of you may not be enthusiastic about:
Yes, that’s right, we will start displaying advertisements. Let’s face it, this is a business and the website needs to pay for itself just like any other part of the business.
For those of you who have a business (or have an associate or friend) that may benefit from advertising here, please contact us at this email address. We will have programs for every budget.
OK, enough of the business side of things, let’s have some fun…

really, I don't think of myself this way - it was just a theme thing, really!
Hello DockDoggers,
I hope you are enjoying the site so far. It has been dually a lot of fun...and a lot of pain to provide it for you.
The content management system we are now using for the content of this site creates sort of "a reverse conundrum", in a manner of speaking…
You see, many of the things that have always been somewhat difficult to manage in web development are now quite a bit easier (managing and organizing content, database integration, dynamic content). On the other hand, there are a number of things which have proved to be much less straight-forward than it would be to produce traditional HTML But I digress…that’s not the purpose of this blog. The purpose of this blog is to try to pass on what I know and what I have learned to you, the end-user. I will try to write whenever I think of something that may be useful to you. These may consist of ‘how-tos’, introduction to features of this site and answers to the questions queried by you. Subjects can be the site as a whole, the forums or even concerning general computing or internet subjects. If I run out of important things to say, I may be forced to ruminate, step up on a soapbox, or say what’s on my mind. You wouldn’t want that (trust me), so I suggest you keep the questions coming. |
