DockDogs Third Florida Event of the year is a Success
by Brian King
With our third pet expo, this time in West Palm Beach, under way on a glorious Friday afternoon we were already having a great time with competitors. And they were clearly glad to there with us.
In our first round of competition was set to be the Speed Retrieve™. And with just four teams it was going to be quick but these dogs were going all out for the win no matter what. In third place with a time of 7.773 was Blue Fin, with Beverly Bickhart, from Cape Coral who had been at all of our Florida events so far. In second place were Port Charlotte’s Sophie and Stephanie Cook with a time of 7.669. First place was to go to Rusty and Joey Spurlock, driving down from Tennessee, who got a time of 6.229.
Next up was Big Air®. And we saw the same three teams at the top. This time, however, we had Joey up with his buddy Tango in third place at a distance of 20’7”. Second went to Sophie who shot out to 21’8”. And the high flying Fin took the win with a leap of 23’ even! This was just the beginning for Fin’s long leaps. It seems like every jump was about to get bigger and bigger.
Saturday started with a few new teams on the dock but it was the Fin show again. With a first place jump ten feet longer than the second place team of Mindy and Decker, it was Fin getting out to 23’1” that took the lead from the get go. Third place belonged to Joel Pierce and Emma this fine Florida morning with a jump of 9’7”.
Fin’s winning ways were just getting started at that point. Coming in first with a jump of 23’4” we knew what we were in for on this day. Second place was Rusty and Joey who got out to a respectable 21’. And third place was to belong to Gunner and Ryan Hutchini, from Jupiter, who got to 20’6”.
In the last round of Big Air® of the weekend Fin took the win with a 24’1” leap. Almost three feet longer than the second place team of Rusty and Joey who got out to 21’2”. Third place was set for Ryan and Gunner who got out to 19’8”.
Next up was a quick run at the EXTREME VERTICAL™! This was to be Fin’s only drop from the top spot of the weekend, coming in third with a height of 5’6”. The top two spots turned into a shootout between team members with Brock and Rusty going at it for the top spot. In the end it was Rusty who would prevail at the height of 6’6”.
With all qualifier rounds in the books we moved on to the finals.
In the Amateur ranks we saw just three dogs competing and to no one’s surprise it was Joey Spurlock’s Brock getting a first place finish over all at a distance of 16’11”. Second place saw Jazmine and Vicki getting out to 14’11”. And while he may only have gotten out to 10’5” the weekend’s smallest jumper, Charlie, stole third place and the crowd’s hearts!
In the Semi-Pro Final we had Joey making a run for the top spot but being beat out by none other than Sophie who got to 19’10”. But don’t despair, Joey took both second and third place with his dogs Rusty and Tango who got out to 19’6” and 18’3” respectively. We had but one team qualified for the Pro Finals and you know who it is…IT’S BLUE FIN. To make it official we had him jump and he got out to a shortened length of 21’10”.
In the end the weather held up its end of the bargain and we again all had another great event in Florida. What could be better than Sun, Fun, and jumping dogs?
